QUARTER SAWN LUMBER
In yesterday’s posting on the Arizona Antique Shows upcoming January 24 and 25, 2009 Antique Show, the Diva mentioned quarter sawn oak furniture. In quarter sawing, logs are first quartered, and then each quarter is sawn separtely into flat boards. The wood is cut at right angles to the growth rings, resulting in a distinct quarter grain. Since this type of cutting results in more waste, and is a far more lengthy process, the resulting boards are more expensive than traditionally cut boards. Quarter sawn oak was used extensively in the furniture of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly by Gustav Stickley. Quarter sawn lumber fell out of favor during the first half of this century because of the waste, cost and labor involved. Today, most furniture uses plain sawn wood. Quarter sawn wood is hardwearing, extremely durable and resistant to warping and liquids. Quarter sawn oak furniture has increased in value more than any other type of antique furniture. You can see beautiful examples of this furniture for sale by Ontario Antiques at the Arizona Antique Show. Show hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. ADMISSION TO THIS SHOW IS FREE. For more information, visit www.azantiqueshow.com.
