Ohio’s Fostoria Glass Co.
Fostoria Glass Co. began producing glass in Fostoria, Ohio in 1887, but moved to Moundsville, West Virginia four years later. They were very successful for nearly a hundred years, finally closing in 1986 after being bought by the Lancaster Colony company in 1983. They became the largest producers of hand-made glass in America. Their largest production lines were stemware but they also made a full range of tableware including the first complete dinner service in glass in America.

A large amount of the Fostoria tableware pieces were needle etched or wheel cut, both popular forms of decoration for early 20th century glass. Their most famous design is the Fostoria American line, an “ice cubes” pattern which was produced from 1915 until they closed in 1986. Fostoria also offered some lines decorated with ruby red or gold bands, another fashionable style of the day. In general, colored stemware and dinnerware pieces made by Fostoria are valued higher than clear counterparts in the same pattern. Fostoria is categorized by collectors as “elegant” glassware, although many pieces were produced during the Depression era. This term came about due to the high quality of this type of glass when compared with other depression era dinnerware. Fostoria also manufactured colognes, stationers’ glassware and candelabra, inkwells, sponge cups, numerous vases, fingerbowls and even fruit jars with marked tops along with other varied items.
